Getting Started in Minecraft Dungeons II
A launch-week checklist from pre-order to the first minecart.
Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026. This page is the first-hour plan: what to buy, where you spawn, which vendors matter, and how to leave town without wasting a legendary drop on a dead-end stat. It is written for people who bounced off the original and for people who still have a favourite dual-wield from 2020.
Before you boot the game
Pick a storefront first. The sequel is a Xbox Play Anywhere title on Xbox and PC, so one Xbox purchase covers both. Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 each have their own listing. Day-one Game Pass covers the Standard campaign on Xbox and PC. If you want the two later DLC packs bundled, look at Deluxe instead of stacking store sales later. The full price split is on pre-order and editions. If you also want the vanilla Minecraft Hero Cape or Twisted Cape, read capes and cosmetics before September 28 — those deadlines are separate from the game download.
PC players should skim system requirements before pre-load day. Minimum is a GTX 1050 / RX 560 class card with 8 GB of RAM. Recommended jumps to a GTX 1060 / RX 580 with 16 GB. The Windows and Xbox download is only a few hundred megabytes according to store listings; Switch builds are much larger, around 6.8 GB.
Minute one: Brave Haven
You do not start on a mission select board. You start in Brave Haven, a coastal hub with vendors, passive mobs, and a minecart network. Walk the square before you queue a dungeon. Two smiths sit at the centre of town: the Blacksmith, who raises item power and rerolls built-in buffs, and the Enchantsmith, who spends Enchant Books plus currency from Soul Corrupted enemies. Both are covered in depth on the Blacksmith and Enchantsmith page.
Open the inventory once so you can see the new layout. You still hold a melee weapon and a ranged weapon. Armor is now four separate pieces instead of one chest. Three artifact slots still hold active skills. Three talisman slots hold passives. The gamescom HUD also shows a dedicated Effects and Enchantments list — hold that in mind when a drop looks pretty but does nothing for your build.
The first loadout, not the perfect loadout
Do not wait for a unique. Equip the highest power melee and bow you have, fill empty armor slots, and park any pet or regen talisman you find. The Xbox Games Showcase demo used a bone talisman that summoned a dog; that pet drew aggro, died, and respawned on a short timer. If you see something similar on launch day, keep it. A messy pet build still teaches positioning faster than a glass-cannon screenshot build.
When you are ready to leave town, open the Overworld map and take a minecart toward the nearest marked dungeon rather than walking the whole coast. Fast travel does not skip combat. Expect ambushes on the path, then a proper dungeon, then a boss door. Rainy Plains was the gamescom route. Howling Woods and Little Howl Hamlet appeared in earlier footage. Treat those names as landmarks, not a full atlas — the Brave Haven guide lists the ones confirmed so far.
The video in the middle of this page is a long hands-on run. Watch it for camera language, jump timing, and how messy a four-player huddle looks in a tight cave. Then come back to the checklist.
Combat habits to lock in during hour one
- Stay aggressive. Artifact cooldowns are short. Waiting behind a shield is how the Copper Monstrosity deletes a health bar.
- Use both weapons. Bows soften packs; melee finishes. The gamescom write-up had the presenter swapping constantly.
- Jump with intent. Jumping is new. It is for gaps, vantage, and slamming into flying Sift enemies later, not for fidgeting.
- Dodge, then shoot. One showcased enchantment fires arrows on a dodge roll. Even without that enchant, the roll is your panic button against lightning traces on the floor.
- Drink early. Health potions are not an emergency-only resource against tank bosses.
If a fight feels unfair, it is probably a gear-power gap, not a hidden class restriction. There are still no classes. You are the sum of the six-to-ten items you bothered to upgrade. For a structured version of that idea, use the loadout planner after this guide.
Co-op on night one
You can play solo. You can also bring three friends online, sit on a couch, or mix the two. Local players should learn the hold-to-open mini inventory immediately so one person’s menu does not freeze the whole living room. Bindings and couch notes live on Controls and Co-op. Matchmaking with strangers was confirmed in the June hands-on, so a pickup group is a valid plan if your friends are on another platform’s queue.
What to do after the first boss
Bank the loot in Brave Haven. Run anything that looks like a favourite through the Blacksmith before you replace it. If you picked up an Enchant Book, save it for a weapon you actually like rather than the first white-text sword. Then either push the Overworld toward the next dungeon or start collecting the currency Soul Corrupted enemies drop. That currency is the Enchantsmith’s gate.
When you are ready for named fights, jump to how to beat the Copper Monstrosity and how to beat the Twisted Warden. When rifts start appearing in the Overworld, The Sift is the other dimension they lead to. Rank the loot itself on the weapons tier list once you have a dozen drops to compare.
That is the whole first hour: buy the right edition, learn the town, upgrade something you like, take a minecart, fight like the sequel wants you to fight, and come back to town before you vendor a future build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do I need to finish Minecraft Dungeons 1 first?
No. The sequel continues the story, but the tutorials and hub are built for new heroes. Playing the original is optional flavour, not a gate.
Is Minecraft Dungeons II on Game Pass?
Yes. The Standard campaign is included with Game Pass on day one for Xbox and PC. Deluxe cosmetics and later DLC are separate — see pre-order.
Where do I go after the tutorial?
Stay in Brave Haven long enough to meet both smiths, then take a minecart toward the nearest dungeon on the Overworld map.
Can I keep a favourite weapon as I level?
Yes. The Blacksmith can raise an item to your current power cap and reroll its built-in buff, which is the sequel's answer to loot treadmill anxiety.
Does the game have classes?
No. Your build is melee plus ranged plus armor, artifacts, and talismans. Templates live on starter builds.
