Minecraft Dungeons II Inventory and Gear Slots

From six slots to twelve, plus the mini-menu that keeps couch co-op moving.

Inventory and Gear Slots

Minecraft Dungeons II expands combat slots from six to twelve. That is the sentence on Minecraft.net’s August 31, 2026 gameplay-systems article, and it is the whole reason this page exists. The first game asked you to pick a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, one armor piece, and three artifacts. The sequel still wants a melee and a ranged, still wants three artifacts, then splits armor into four tiles and adds three talisman slots for passives. Pets moved into those talisman slots. This is the map of that screen, written from official copy, the gamescom inventory still, and the Xbox Wire hands-on — not from a fake endgame stash size.

The game is unreleased until September 29, 2026. Treat every named item below as demo-era evidence. Power numbers on the public screenshot are a snapshot of one hero, not a loot table.

The twelve combat slots

Count them the way the sequel counts them:

  1. Melee weapon — swords, hammers, staffs, dual-wield sets, sickles, pickaxe-shaped comfort tools. One equipped at a time.
  2. Ranged weapon — bows, crossbows, trickbows. One equipped at a time. You always hold both a melee and a ranged; you are not choosing a class.
  3. Helmet
  4. Chestplate
  5. Leggings
  6. Boots
  7. Artifact 1
  8. Artifact 2
  9. Artifact 3
  10. Talisman 1
  11. Talisman 2
  12. Talisman 3

Armor is no longer a single chest. Official copy says helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots, matching regular Minecraft’s four-piece idea. Empty tiles are leaked health. A gamescom still showed mixed power on those four tiles (examples in the mid-20s with one tile lagging). The lagging tile is the first thing you take to the Blacksmith, not a reason to vendor the whole look.

Artifacts are still the three active buttons. Gamescom HUD prompts labelled them on Y, B, and RB on an Xbox controller. Cooldowns in the preview were short on purpose. Rank an artifact by how often you press it, not by how loud the icon is.

Talismans are the new passive row. Official copy calls them a sprinkle of extra numbers and extra playstyle. Pets live here now instead of occupying an artifact slot. The dedicated ranking is on the talismans tier list. The short version for inventory: three passives, they level with use rather than with a traditional rarity ladder, and a bone that summons a dog is the only full hands-on pet we have.

What sits around the twelve slots

The gamescom inventory is not only a grid. It also shows:

  • A character model with the cape and pet you actually equipped.
  • Power on each piece, plus a hero level in the corner.
  • An Effects and Enchantments (also labelled Effects & Stats on some stills) pane that flattens every bonus from weapons, armor, and talismans into one list.
  • Currency clusters. Souls matter because Soul Corrupted enemies feed the Enchantsmith. Do not treat every glowing number as emeralds from 2020.
  • A highlighted tooltip. The public still calls out Twisted Tooth with the line “Increases souls gained by 40%.” That is a real talisman effect from a demo screenshot, not a wiki invention. It is also not a drop rate.

Open Effects and Enchantments in Brave Haven after every meaningful drop. If two pieces say the same verb, vendor the uglier one. If nothing on the list says heal, pet, or dodge, you know why a tower fight felt brittle. The loadout planner is this same grid as a checklist.

Random effects, books, and the three different “enchants”

People mash three systems into one word. Keep them separate on the inventory screen.

  • Random effects on items. Official: items can roll extra effects so two copies of the same piece feel different. The Blacksmith can reroll a built-in buff when the look is right and the prefix is wrong.
  • Enchant Books. Found in the world, stored in a personal library, applied at the Enchantsmith to any gear slot you choose. Xbox’s gamescom coverage showed books that add dodge frequency, arrows on every dodge, and fire on arrows. Those demo labels may not be the launch names. The enchantments tier list ranks the verbs, not a fake item ID.
  • Talisman passives. Equipped in the three new slots. They are not books. They are not artifacts.

Do not dump a library book onto a grey sword you will vendor in ten minutes. Park the book until a favourite exists, then stamp it. Do not confuse a random fire prefix with the fire-arrows book. One is a roll. The other is a playstyle.

Unlimited ammo that recharges

Projectile weapons no longer ask you to vacuum arrows off the floor. Official copy: ammunition is unlimited and recharges automatically over time. That changes how you read a bow in the inventory. You are not stocking a quiver. You are asking whether the bow’s verb (charge, volume, bounce, on-dodge volley) matches the next fight. A charged bow that you can fire while stepping off copper lightning is a boss weapon. A trickbow with a particle and no verb is a town screenshot.

You still swap to melee to finish packs. Unlimited ammo is not a reason to never press the sword. How to Play is the cadence: ranged to soften, melee to close, artifacts on cooldown, dodge the named tell.

Mini inventory: tap versus hold

This is the couch fix. Xbox Wire at gamescom: press up on the D-pad for the default full inventory. Hold that control and a miniature on-screen menu appears so you can swap without pausing the living room. All four local players can hold at once. That is the entire quality-of-life pitch, and it is the bind you should teach before you teach anyone what a talisman is.

Use the overlay to:

  • Swap a broken bow during a Copper dash.
  • Hand a better chestplate mid-wave without freezing three other people.
  • Check power before you vendor in a hallway.

Use the full menu in town when you need Effects and Enchantments, the library, or a Blacksmith comparison. Do not open the big screen on a lightning trace. Bind details and the expected controller layout live on controls.

Keyboard and mouse have not published a final hold-to-open key. On launch day, confirm that jump, dodge, and inventory-hold are three different actions. Combining any two of those is how you fall off a Sift platform while trying to drink.

Jump is not an inventory slot, but it reads on this screen

The sequel adds a jump for parkour and for jump attacks. It does not consume a combat slot. It does change which gear you keep. Movement talismans and reach weapons (Battlestaff showed up in the August gameplay trailer) matter more because you can leave the floor. If a drop only makes sense on flat Rainy Plains, it may be the wrong piece for a rift. Inventory is where you make that call before the minecart, not after a flying sprout has beamed a pack.

Town loop that keeps the twelve slots honest

  1. Fill empty armor tiles, even with junk, so you are not naked.
  2. Blacksmith the lowest power tile to your current cap.
  3. Slot a pet talisman if you have one. Slot souls-gain if you plan to Enchantsmith tonight.
  4. Stamp a library book only on the weapon you will still hold tomorrow.
  5. Open Effects and Enchantments and read the flattened list out loud. If you cannot name three verbs, the pretty unique is not a build.
  6. Hold-inventory once in town so muscle memory exists before co-op.

Deluxe’s Blub and the pre-order Twisted Chicken occupy a follow slot in screenshots. Official copy says Blub cannot fight. Until a launch tooltip puts a chicken on a talisman tile, do not evict Twisted Tooth or a dog for a cosmetic.

When the grid is full, leave town. The inventory is a Brave Haven object. It is not a third boss. The loadout planner is the paper version of this page if you want a second screen in the living room.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many gear slots does Minecraft Dungeons II have?

Twelve combat slots: melee, ranged, four armor pieces, three artifacts, and three talismans. That is the official 6-to-12 expansion. Use the loadout planner as a checklist.

Where did pets go?

Pets moved from artifact slots into the new talisman row. Rank them on the talismans tier list, not as a fourth artifact.

Do bows still need arrows?

No. Official copy says projectile weapons have unlimited ammo that recharges over time. You still swap to melee — see How to Play.

What is the difference between tap and hold inventory?

Tap D-pad up for the full menu. Hold it for the on-screen mini menu so couch players can swap without pausing. Bind notes are on controls.

Should I apply Enchant Books from the inventory screen?

Books go to a personal library, then to the Enchantsmith in town, who can stamp any gear slot. Walkthrough: Blacksmith and Enchantsmith. Rank the verbs on the enchantments tier list.

What is the Effects and Enchantments menu?

A flattened list of every bonus from weapons, armor, and talismans. Open it in town when a drop looks strong but the run still feels slow.
